โ† Crypto ยท lesson 9 of 12

Not Your Keys, Not Your Coins

There's an old saying in crypto, not your keys, not your coins, and a lot of folks learned it the hard way. I board horses, so let me explain it the barn way, because that's what finally makes it click.

By the end of this one you'll know what custody means, the difference between crypto a company holds for you and crypto you hold yourself, and the honest trade-offs of each.

The lesson

Custody is just the question of who is actually holding the thing. When crypto sits on an exchange, that's boarding your horse at somebody else's barn, it's your horse on paper, but their barn, their gate, their key, and you need their say-so to take it home. Most days that's fine, boarding is convenient, they handle the feed and the fences. But if that barn goes broke, and big ones have, your horse is standing in the middle of their bankruptcy, and you get in line with everybody else they owe. Holding your own keys is keeping the horse at your place, nobody can lock you out, and nobody's coming to feed it either, every fence, every gate latch, every backup is on you. The keys are the secret code that controls the crypto, so in the network's eyes whoever holds the keys is the true owner, no matter whose name is on the paperwork. Neither barn is wrong, but you should always know which barn your horse is standing in.

Walk the $100

Same lesson, told by a hundred dollar bill. Tap to walk it one step at a time.

In this example, $100 of crypto sitting on an exchange is really an IOU from that company.

When one big exchange collapsed in 2022, people with balances there couldn't withdraw at all, and years later many had gotten back only part of their money through the courts.

In the same example, moving that $100 to a personal wallet costs a $1 network fee, so $99 ends up under a key only that person holds.

At your kitchen table

You're in the shop waiting room while they figure out why the van is squealing, and the TV over the coffee pot is showing a crypto exchange that froze everybody's withdrawals. You've had $250 sitting on a different exchange since spring. The mechanic says it'll be another hour.

Pick your move. Then peek at the other roads if you're curious.
