Every time crypto moves, computers around the world do the work of checking it and writing it into the shared record book, and the gas fee is what you pay them for that work. It's postage, plain and simple. Mail a birthday card across town in July and it's cheap, mail a package the week before Christmas and the price jumps, because everyone's mailing at once and the trucks only hold so much. Crypto networks are the same, each batch of records only holds so many entries, so when the network is crowded, people bid up the postage to get their letter on the next truck. The fee doesn't go to some company headquarters, it goes to the people running the computers that keep the record book honest. And here's the part that stings beginners, postage doesn't care what's in the envelope, sending $20 can cost the same fee as sending $20,000. So folks who use these networks learn to check the postage before they seal the envelope.
