By the end of this one you'll know how to fill in a four box money map, what net worth means in plain words, and where your own starting line is.
Tonight is a worksheet, so grab paper and draw four boxes: Comes In, Goes Out, Own, and Owe. The two boxes that run your month are the flow boxes. Comes In is every paycheck and side dollar. Goes Out is bills, groceries, and payments, and this is where the map earns its keep, because Goes Out is where money hides. Write every one down and you'll find the streaming service nobody watches, the app fee from two phones ago, the little charges that slip past because they're small and quiet. The other two boxes take one sentence: what you own minus what you owe is a number called net worth, and it's allowed to be negative, plenty of good families start there. But the flow boxes are the ones you can steer this very month, because every leak you find in Goes Out is money that was already yours. So we'll fill the boxes in together right now, honestly, no rounding things prettier than they are, and you'll leave tonight with your whole money life on one page.

In this example, a family fills in the Goes Out box and finds 100 dollars a month of subscriptions hiding in plain sight: 45 in streaming services, 25 in phone apps, and a 30 dollar gym badge nobody has scanned since March.
Nobody on this stream is telling them what to cancel, that's their call at their own table.
The map's whole job was making the 100 dollars visible, because you can't decide about money you can't see.
Sunday afternoon, dishes in the sink, and your partner asks the question out of nowhere: where does it all go every month? You open your mouth to answer and realize neither of you actually knows.
