An Emergency Fund Is a Hay Barn

Out here we fill the hay barn before the first snow, not after the horses are hungry. Tonight I want to show you the money version of that barn, because it changed how our family sleeps at night.

By the end of this one you'll know what an emergency fund is, where people usually keep one, and why folks call it the first pile a family builds.

The lesson

An emergency fund is a pile of money you set aside and do not touch unless something real breaks, the car, the furnace, your hours at work. On the farm we stack hay all summer so that when winter hits, the animals eat no matter what the weather does. That hay isn't for selling and it isn't for show, it has one job: get us through. Your emergency fund works the same way, it sits in a plain savings account where you can grab it fast, not tied up somewhere risky. A lot of folks aim for three to six months of their bills, and plenty of people start with a few hundred dollars, because a small barn still beats no barn. Interest, which is money the bank pays you just for keeping your cash there, adds a little on top, but the real prize is sleeping through a snowstorm because the barn is full.

Walk the $100

Same lesson, told by a hundred dollar bill. Tap to walk it one step at a time.

In this example, a family moves 100 dollars into a savings account every month, and the account pays 4 percent a year, meaning the bank pays them about 4 dollars a year for every 100 dollars sitting there.

After twelve months they've put in 1,200 dollars, and the bank has added roughly 22 dollars of interest along the way, so the barn holds about 1,222.

The interest isn't the headline, the headline is that when the water heater dies, the 600 dollar repair comes out of the barn instead of going on a card at 24 percent.

At your kitchen table

The van starts grinding on the way to school drop off, and by lunch the shop calls with the number: 600 dollars for brakes. The kids need that van on Monday, and you're standing in the parking lot deciding where the money comes from.

Pick your move. Then peek at the other roads if you're curious.
