Blockchain Is Just a Record Book

My grandma kept a notebook of every egg sold and every dollar owed, and nobody dared argue with that notebook. Blockchain is that notebook copied a thousand times, and in 25 minutes you'll understand it better than most of the internet.

By the end of this one you'll know what a blockchain actually is, who writes in it, and why it's so hard to cheat.

The lesson

A blockchain is a ledger, which is just an old word for a record book, and its whole job is tracking who sent what to whom. Picture a little town where every trade, every sale, every IOU gets written in one big book down at the feed store. Now here's the twist, instead of one book behind the counter, every family in town keeps their own full copy, and every night they all compare pages. If somebody sneaks into their copy and erases a debt, everyone else's book still shows the truth, so the cheat gets tossed out. A new page only gets added when most of the town agrees it's correct. That's blockchain, no single boss owns the book, so no single boss can quietly rewrite it. The 'chain' part just means every new page is stapled to the page before it, so tearing one out leaves a hole everybody can see.

Walk the $100

Same lesson, told by a hundred dollar bill. Tap to walk it one step at a time.

In this example, someone sends $100 worth of crypto to their cousin two states away.

The computers that write in the record book charge a fee to add the entry, $2 in this example, so the cousin ends up with $98 worth.

Within minutes that entry sits in thousands of copies of the book around the world, and no bank, weekend, or holiday was involved.

At your kitchen table

You volunteered to collect $15 from each of the 12 families on your kid's ball team for trophies, $180 total. Tonight the group chat blew up because your notebook says one family never paid and they swear up and down they did. Everybody is being polite, and nobody quite believes anybody.

Pick your move. Then peek at the other roads if you're curious.
