Net worth is one simple subtraction, everything your family owns minus everything your family owes. Farmers have kept this ledger forever, you walk the property and count it up, the animals, the tractor, the hay in the loft, then you flip the page and list the feed store tab and the loan on the truck, and the difference between the two is what the farm is actually worth. Your version is the same walk, just indoors, the cash in your accounts, the cars, anything real you own on one side, the credit cards, the car loans, the mortgage on the other. The number can be small, and for plenty of good hardworking families it comes out negative, more owed than owned, and that's a starting line, not a shame. What makes it powerful is checking it again in six months, because which direction it's moving matters a hundred times more than how big it is. A farm ledger doesn't judge the farmer, it just tells the truth so the farmer knows what to work on next.

Here's the part that surprises people.
In this example a family has 100 dollars in cash and uses 30 of it to pay down a credit card, and their net worth doesn't move at all, cash went down 30 and what they owe went down 30, so the subtraction lands in the exact same spot.
Spend that same 30 on pizza night instead and net worth drops by 30.
Same bill, and only the ledger can see the difference.
At the family barbecue your brother-in-law pulls up in a brand new 60,000 dollar truck and everybody circles it in the driveway. On the ride home you feel about two feet tall, and your ten-year-old asks why you've gone quiet.
